Stirrer Bars
Magnetic stirrer bars, also known as stir bars, are small, cylindrical or capsule-shaped magnets. Encased in a durable, chemically resistant material, usually PTFE (Teflon). These bars are used in conjunction with a magnetic stirrer device to mix solutions in laboratories. The stir bar is placed inside a container, typically a beaker or flask, and a rotating magnetic field generated by the magnetic stirrer causes the bar to spin rapidly. This movement creates a vortex in the liquid, ensuring thorough mixing without the need for mechanical stirring.
Stirrer bars come in various shapes and sizes. This includes cylindrical, oval, or cross-shaped designs, to optimize stirring efficiency depending on the viscosity of the liquid or the shape of the container. They are widely used in chemical, biological, and pharmaceutical labs. Tasks such as dissolving reagents, maintaining homogeneity in solutions, and performing titrations. Their PTFE coating allows them to resist high temperatures, corrosive chemicals, and repeated autoclaving for sterilization.
