The main objective of a Dangerous Goods Storage cabinet is to shield its internal contents from external ignition sources. This serves several critical purposes:
- Evacuation Preparation: It allows time for the orderly evacuation of the building in case of a potential emergency.
- Emergency Services Response: Emergency response teams can be mobilized and deployed more effectively.
- Building Protection: It helps prevent the spread of fire within the building.
To achieve this, the cabinet is equipped with a Thermal Barrier. The Thermal Barrier is specifically designed to impede the transfer of heat through the cabinet walls. It consists of a 1.2 mm sheet metal construction on each side of a 40mm air pocket. This construction ensures that the contents of the cabinet remain secure while facilitating a swift response from emergency teams.
Spill Collection Bund
Justrite storage cabinets are equipped with a 150mm sump and a bottom shelf that acts as a cover to prevent storage within the compound. This design ensures that leaks from damaged containers and spills are contained within the cabinet, minimizing the risk of incidents on the surrounding floor. The potential dangers include fire or explosion resulting from the presence of hazardous goods.
The sump serves as a collection point for any leaks or spills, preventing them from spreading outside the cabinet. However, in the event of spills occurring within the cabinet bund, immediate cleanup is essential to maintain a safe and secure storage environment for dangerous goods.
Fusible Links:
Justrite cabinets are equipped with a fusible link that facilitates convenient access to the cabinet contents by keeping the doors latched open. In the event of exposure to heat or flames, the fusible link is designed to melt at 76 degrees Celsius, triggering the automatic closure of the doors. This safety feature ensures the protection of chemicals stored within the cabinet, enhancing overall safety and containment measures.
Restricted access:
Flammable liquids and corrosive substances cabinets are designed to be lockable and can be secured with a padlock. In accordance with Australian Standards, access to dangerous goods is restricted to authorized personnel only. Only staff members who have undergone training in the proper handling and use of these products are permitted access. Factory and warehouse staff who are not competent in the safe handling of dangerous goods must undergo training before being granted access to such materials. This strict protocol ensures compliance with safety regulations and minimizes risks associated with handling hazardous substances.
